Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Genius in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element holding it together to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, only for him publicly stated that the club had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Speculation that he could resign were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic on the pitch as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, observers have struggled to ascertain if they're getting better or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Comeback

A single player continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio during this campaign. He completed the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were attempting to stay there for another season. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.

He joined initially under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His True Position

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to identify the nature of his skill set. Labeled as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
