French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.

This policy shift comes after the Prime Minister sent a letter to the French leader asking him to support the plan and stating there currently "have no effective preventive measure" in the Channel.

French security forces will be allowed to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to official confirmation.

French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both personnel and individuals.

"It is crucial that we implement these methods this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."

Now, a French naval police representative says personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of safeguarding human life.

Notably, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible method to disable the engines of the vessels.

This determination to intervene at all is a major advancement, coming after a brief change towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the former Interior Minister departed from government.

That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were observed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.

Now French authorities will again be allowed to intercept boats before they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.

Strong winds are currently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the human trafficking networks will be seeking ways to adjust to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the past.

UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been contacted for response.
