Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using these treatments should be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
