The Two Fatalities Revealed in Brown University Attack as Law Enforcement Persist in Search for Killer.

Two students who died in the weekend's violent attack at Brown University were being remembered Monday – as a manhunt for their shooter continued following the freeing by authorities in Rhode Island of the sole person questioned in the case.

Tributes for Ella Cook

The student Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was described as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, per the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which honored her memory at a gathering on Sunday.

Her role included second-in-command of Brown’s division of the College Republicans organization, the group said. The White House press secretary also shared condolences on social media, stating: “There are no words. Thinking of her family and friends, above all her mom and dad.”

The Second Victim

The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, an Uzbek national in his freshman year at the Ivy League university, family members said.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He had big dreams of entering the field of neurosurgery and aiding others,” his sibling Samira said in a tribute.

What Happened

Nine more persons were injured in Saturday’s attack in the engineering department of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Authorities said late Sunday that a 24-year-old male arrested in a raid at a lodging about 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“A perpetrator remains free,” stated the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

Neronha explained, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you need to change course and pursue a different angle, and this is precisely what occurred over the last 24 hours or so.”

Ongoing Concerns

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “We know that this is likely to cause renewed concern for our city”.

The assailant began shooting inside a lecture hall in the engineering facility on Saturday, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a handgun, a law enforcement official told the Associated Press.

Police that searched the hotel recovered two handguns and two ammunition clips when the suspect was arrested, as was reported.

The Wounded Victims

Of the nine hurt, one student was discharged from care, said Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in critical but stable condition, and one was in critical condition, police said on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a private academy in North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

Further Tributes

Cook was remembered at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only in her youth... but at Brown University she was an incredible light in that specific location as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the club. “Ella was recognized for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she aided her club and other students,” he said.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the passing of Umurzokov in a statement. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to Mr Umurzokov’s family, friends, and fellow students and grieve for of his potential.”

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US college with about 7,300 undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 mass shootings documented across the United States so far in the current year, according to statistics. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
