Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.

Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.

Officers report they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.

The liquid had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they added.

Law enforcement then discovered multiple other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials state initial examinations suggest the substance was likely blood from a person.

"There is still no indication as to its source; authorities are presently not cognizant of any harm in association with the occurrence," they commented.

City officials said they were working "to solve the case" and have appealed to the residents for details.

A high-ranking official stated the incident made him stunned and had to be resolved quickly.

"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the death of nine people by a shooter focusing on people of migrant background in February 2020.
